With only two games left in the season, the LWK Tigercats are still battling for their first season win. The Tigercats conclude their season this weekend, playing St. John-Endicott on Friday, followed by Liberty Christian on Saturday.

The Tigercats went on the road on Jan. 23 to face the Touchet Indians and returned home with a 55-20 loss.

Early in the game, the Tigercats relied on their perimeter players to put up points and keep the team in the game. Two completed free throws by Chance Rice helped the team remain competitive in the first quarter when they trailed Touchet 7-16.

The second quarter went strongly in favor of Touchet, as the Tigercats only put up five additional points for the half. Touchet scored 12, and the Tigercats trailed 28-12 going into halftime.

Touchet’s defense prevented the Tigercats from getting many good looks at the basket in the second half, and Touchet held LWK scoreless in the third quarter.

Cameron Ellis sank two 3-pointers to help narrow the scoring gap in the fourth quarter, but Touchet earned the win.

Ellis led the Tigercats in scoring with 10 points. Cole Evans added six points, and Rice and Terrell Webb each had two points.

On Saturday, the Tigercats hosted Pomeroy in LaCrosse, and the Tigercats suffered another loss to the league’s second ranked team. Pomeroy earned the win over the Tigercats, 70-31.

Early in the game, the LWK team battled to break down the Pomeroy press and drive to the hoop against their zone defense. As a quick team, Pomeroy defended well to prevent the Tigercats from getting open shots at the basket.

Throughout the game, the Tigercats struggled to get open shots at the hoop. The team relied on open perimeter shots for the majority of their points. Collectively, the team sank seven three-point shots against Pomeroy.

But Pomeroy had equal amount of success from the perimeter, also sinking seven 3-pointers against the Tigercats.

The key to the game proved to be rebounding, as Pomeroy decisively outrebounded the Tigercats. The rebounds allowed multiple put back points for Pomeroy, and helped their first half lead grow to 42-13.

The Tigercats dominated the third quarter both offensively and defensively. They hit multiple three-point shots while limiting Pomeroy’s shooting opportunities. The Tigercats outscored the Pirates 12-6 in the third quarter.

Pomeroy came out strong in the fourth quarter and quickly widened the scoring gap again. They ran the floor against the Tigercats and scored 22 points to LWK’s six points.

Rice led the team in scoring with 10 points, followed by Ellis with eight. Evans added six points to the scoreboard, and Weston Miller had three points. Jacob Johnson and Doug McKeen each scored two points.

The Tigercats travel to St. John on Friday to face SJE before hosting Liberty Christian in the final game of the season.

With SJE only one spot ahead of the Tigercats in league standings, the team is determined to play a full game and earn a win in league competition this year. The key to winning the game is consistent defensive pressure and rebounding at both ends of the court.

The Tigercats also need multiple athletes to step up in the upcoming games to create more balanced scoring and earn the first season win.

Prior to the start of the Liberty Christian game in Washtucna on Saturday, the Tigercats are honoring seven graduating seniors from the team’s roster.
