Local yarn group launches Blankets for Barracks Troops project

A local yarn group has taken on a project to support troops who are returning to Fort Hood, Texas, after a deployment. The project is Blankets for Barracks Troops and is being spearheaded by Megan Palmer, the Family Readiness Group (FRG) leader.

Palmer created a group on Facebook for the project called “Blankets for Barracks Troops.” Anyone may join the group on Facebook.

According to Palmer, when it gets closer to time for the troops to come home the FRG sets up the room to welcome them ‘home.’

The goal is to have a blanket for every barracks soldier – something warm, inviting and homemade to show them appreciation and to show them there are people happy to have them home.

The local yarn group meets every Thursday at a member’s house. Each member is currently working on afghans for the project with the goal to ship completed afghans and any blocks in March 2015 to Palmer.

The group is challenging other crocheters, knitters and quilters to join in the project.

Completed afghans/quilts need to be 48 inches by 72 inches.

Those who wish to make squares are asked to make them a finished size of 6- or 12-inches. Those who are making squares may either join the squares into an afghan or turn them in for someone else to join.

Blankets/afghans may be in any color, style or design.

Those who are participating are reminded that there are both male and female soldiers in this company.

In addition, Palmer is accepting donations of supplies for the project.

Donations may be dropped off at the Ritzville Area Chamber of Commerce, 111 West Main Avenue.
