A View from the Locker Room

It’s been nearly two weeks ago when word came out of Seattle that the Seahawks had traded Percy Harvin to the New York Jets. I’m sure that you were just as surprised as I was. We had seen some really great plays made by Harvin in his limited action last year. This year he scored three TDs in a Monday night game against the Washington Redskins but each was nullified by penalties.

During last February’s Super Bowl, Percy had a couple of big plays on jet sweeps and who will ever forget the second half kickoff that Harvin took back for a killer TD that took a lot of the life out of the Denver Broncos.

The Seahawks gave a lot to get Harvin from the Minnesota Vikings but got almost nothing from the New York Jets in their trade for Harvin. Word was coming out of Seattle that Percy Harvin had become a problem in the locker room. He also had refused to go back into a football game during a loss to Dallas.

Apparently, Percy Harvin has had problems going back to college and I’m sure high school. Harvin is an extraordinary talent with robust speed. Because of that talent teams will take a chance on an athlete in hopes that a change of scenery will bring out the very best in that person both mentally and physically.

Harvin sat out most all of last season playing in only a couple of games before he was healthy enough to play in the Super Bowl. There are a fair amount of fans that have taken the good riddance route to Percy Harvin and justifiably so.

But before we get crazy about our feelings towards a high priced talent let’s offer him good luck in the Big Apple or New Jersey actually. We need to thank Percy for his play in the Super Bowl because those few plays set the tone for the game and the second half kickoff made it 29-0 Seahawks before some fans even returned to their seats.

I thank Percy Harvin for his Super Bowl game that brought the championship to Seattle for the very first time. He had a lot to do with the victory as well as many others on that spectacular team. Harvin will now be the go to guy for a 1-7 team that doesn’t have a lot of confidence in their starting or backup QBs. Truthfully, the Jets need a lot to become successful and Percy Harvin isn’t good enough to carry the team on his back, especially from the position that he plays. He can enhance a good team but he’ll have trouble saving a bad one.

We often hear people talk about the chemistry of a team. When it is good a team can endure a lot. When it is bad the tension can erupt into feuds that can be destructive to a team’s season.

I’ve seen teammates square off in a locker room over perceived innocent kidding. But when it goes too far it can get ugly in a hurry and for some reason teammates are expected to take sides and that isn’t always a good thing. The only hope is that the two that faced off can make amends and realize that the team is more important than their egos.

What happened in Seattle’s locker room with Percy Harvin and his teammates obviously wore out its welcome and the talented speedster was sent off to the New York Jets. For everyone involved there is hope that a big lesson was learned and those same types of mistakes won’t happen again.

Let’s face it these things are tough on us fans especially those that invested in a Percy Harvin jersey!
