Finishing as the No. 5 seed to the regional tournament means the road to the WIAA 2B Hardwood Classic has to go through Colfax on Saturday. The LRS Lady Broncos must defeat the Lady Bulldogs when they meet at 2 p.m. at Cheney High School. The winner advances to state, the loser’s season is over.

“We don’t have to tweek a lot of what we do to win,” head coach John Galbreath said. “We need to compete the whole game. If we do, we are going to be fine. If we don’t, then we are going to have issues.”

These two teams know each other well as league opponents. The Lady Broncos won at home 44-43 on Jan. 11. Colfax then picked up a home court win 46-35 on Jan. 31 in the final regular season game. Colfax won again the next week at the district tournament, 66-50.

“Defensively our top priority has got to be rebounding and moving our feet,” Galbreath said. “We get real straight legged at times and it’s just not good. If you can’t get in a stance, move your feet and stay in front of your guy it wears us out as a team and we just can’t get a stop.”

The Lady Broncos earned a regional tournament game by defeating Dayton, 51-34, in a loser-out game last Saturday. The day before DeSales dismantled LRS, 53-44.

“Against DeSales we didn’t compete for probably three quarters in that game, until we had our backs against the wall,” Galbreath said. “During the first three quarters if we got a loose ball we just held it as if we were afraid to attack them.”

DeSales took an 11-7 lead after the first period and collected a 27-17 edge at the half. Going into the fourth quarter they were out in front, 46-30.

The Lady Broncos turned up the heat in the fourth with a 14-7 effort, but didn’t have enough time to erase the deficit.

Individual scoring wasn’t available at press time.

Against Dayton the Lady Broncos held their opponent to single digit scoring in three of the four quarters.

At the end of the first half, LRS was up 23-17. In the third quarter Dayton trimmed the LRS lead to three, but never got closer. The Lady Broncos rolled in the third quarter, 18-6.

Tessa Jantz led the scoring with 13. Dalyn Killian scored 10 and Jenna Bennett had nine. Mallory Kessler added seven and Tommi Swannack scored five. Randi York finished with four points and Felicia Ziemer had three.
