Here comes Christmas! (And New Years)

As the holidays swiftly approach, the Washtucna ASB officers and the National Honor Society (NHS) chapter have stayed busy for the past few weeks. Nov. 27 marked the start of the annual community food drive; a combined effort organized by the officers of the student body, the NHS, and also the elders of the Washtucna Community Church.

The entire school, including preschoolers and staff members, donate canned or non-perishable foods on a daily basis. To boost the input of food, the ASB and NHS officers have divided the school into groups to compete with each other to donate the most food out of the entire district. These groups are assigned large cans where they are to deposit their donated items.

To further stimulate input, the group with the largest weight of total goods is announced as the weekly winner, and is awarded with ice cream and popsicles. When the food drive ends on Dec. 14, the group with the heaviest amount of donated items will be announced the champion of the food drive and will also be awarded with ice cream sundaes and root beer floats: compliments of the ASB and NHS. The officers move the food to the church where it is distributed to people in need by Pastor Dennis Evans and the elders of the church.

Along with the school wide food drive, the NHS is putting on a special Christmas activity for the preschool, kindergarten, and elementary. This year, the NHS has organized “Santa Mail” designed for the young students to submit their formal gift requests via hand written letters.

A decorated mailbox has been placed outside of the office near the main entrance for the youngsters to “mail” their letters to jolly old St. Nick.

Before being released for the winter holidays, students who wrote to Santa will receive a response from the big man in red; that is, a letter written by one of Santa’s helpers, a Washtucna NHS officer.

With Christmas and New Year’s merely weeks away, our ASB and NHS officers have worked very hard to help Washtucna’s students enjoy their time in-between academics and athletics by displaying true good will and cheer to their fellow classmates.

Without these dedicated individuals, life at Washtucna High would be too darn dreary. To our committed leaders, we extend a thank you and a job well done!
