GOOD LUCK AT STATE. The LRS track athletes that are traveling to the state track tournament are (left to right) top row: Dustin Kommes (alternate), Ryan Whitmore and Matt Fryberger. The girl athletes in the front row are Kate Schell, Caitlin Schoessler, Randi York, Maya Wahl and Heidi Hennings.

At the 2B District 7 Meet at Whitworth in Spokane on Saturday, May 19, the LRS track and field team showed just how much talent they possess. The team now has seven athletes continuing on to the state track meet at Eastern Washington University this weekend.

Matt Fryberger, Ryan Whitmore, Kate Schell, Caitlin Schoessler, Randi York, Heidi Hennings and Maya Wahl all qualified for the state tournament. Dustin Kommes is traveling with the team as a potential alternate in the 800-meter.

Out of the seven athletes, five have qualified in individual events and two are competing only in the relay competitions.

Fryberger is competing in three events at state: the 100-meter, the 200-meter and the 400-meter races. Fryberger is currently ranked in fifth in the 200-meter at the state level.

“If Matt runs well, he has a good chance of making finals in all three events and placing,” said Randy Heidenreich, head coach of the LRS track team.

Heidenreich also has high hopes for Whitmore, the other male qualifier. As a sophomore, Heidenreich is excited about the talent and believes that Whitmore has a very good chance of making the finals.

Whitmore is competing in two events, the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Whitmore has been placing in the top two in both of these events continually throughout the season.

The surprise trip to state was earned by Wahl, who posted a personal record in the high jump during the district competition. Wahl jumped four feet, eight inches for the record, which is two inches over her previous best jump.

Along with the high jump, Wahl is also going to be running in the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x200-meter relay.

Hennings placed in the pole vault, who has a personal record for seven feet, six inches. Heidenreich believes she needs to vault at least eight feet to place fifth in the finals. Hennings is also the alternate for both of the relays competing at the state tournament.

Schell, a freshman at Ritzville High School, is competing in four events at the state competition, an impressive feat for any athlete, especially an underclassman. Schell is running in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 4x100-meter relay and the 4x200-meter relay.

“Kate made it in all of her events. She steadily improved her time throughout the season,” said Heidenreich, who believes conditioning was crucial to her continual improvement. “The 100 is tough to place in, for any runner. If she places in the 100 or 200, that’s great as a freshman.”

Joining the relay runners is York and Schoessler; both are sophomores at Ritzville High School. Schoessler and York are the other two legs of the 4x100 and the 4x200-meter relays.

In both of the relays, the girls are not ranked to make the finals at the state tournament, and Heidenreich says the focus is to knock two seconds off of each relay and work on handoffs.

“If we can hit the handoffs, we have an outside chance to make the finals,” said Heidenreich.

The LRS state finalists are practicing at EWU this Thursday before making the final trip for the competition on Saturday morning. Here is the list of LRS athletes at the district track meet.
