Lady Broncos split Districts play, meet Davenport

After a painful loss to Northwest Christian in the opening round of district basketball play, the Lady Broncos rebounded with a 55-37 shelling of Kettle Falls, recording their third win this season over Kettle Falls.

After splitting their first two outings in the district tournament, the Lady Broncos were slated to meet Davenport in a loser-out contest on Wednesday night. The results of the game were not available at press time. If the Lady Broncos defeated Davenport, they play again on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. at Mt. Spokane High School.

Going into Wednesday’s game with the Lady Gorillas, head coach Randy Heidenreich said turnovers would be the key.

“If we have 15 turnovers or less there’s no reason why we shouldn’t beat them,” he said. “The longer we can extend our season, the more experience we can get for the younger girls.”

Davis Killian turned in an impressive effort against Kettle Falls on Monday with 14 points, 12 rebounds a lot of playing minutes. She had scoring help from Brooke Pichette who delivered 11 points. Andrea Bennett scored nine, while Chelsey Heidenreich posted seven points. Jenna Bennett scored six. Mallory Kessler scored three and Kailey York and Kaytlin Phillips each had two. Cathrine Hentges scored one.

“We knew we had to press and zone them,” Heidenreich said. “We finished with pretty balanced scoring with quite a few girls having five or more points.

The Northwest Christian outing was not as pleasant as the Lady Crusaders delivered 62-35 loss in the opening round of the tournament.

The Lady Broncos were trailing by 11 points at the end of the first half and opened the third quarter with promise. They scored seven points, trimming the Lady Crusaders lead to seven before the wheels came off.

After an LRS timeout, the tempo changed and NWC went on a 24-0 run that the Lady Broncos never recovered from.

“We had a bad rotation on press that led to a basket and from there, they went on a 24-0 run,” Heidenreich said. “I still think we can play with them. After that run, our starters were tired and just couldn’t stop the roof from caving in.”

Andrea Bennett led the team with eight points.

Jenna, Killian and Pichette each scored six.

York added five points and Phillips and Maya Wahl each had two.
