  • Wondering why scores vary

    Dale Anderson|Updated Feb 21, 2023

I have a tendency to look at the scores of games that were played the day before and try to imagine what made the game unique. Was a close game close from start to finish, or just in the last few minutes or the last quarter? For instance, last Saturday, the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos defeated the Okanogan Bulldogs, 50-48. In the first half, the Broncos had trouble finding their shooting range and only scored 15 points, which is not a lot for them. The Bulldogs scored 26...

  • More important things

On January 2nd, the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals were playing a big Monday night football game in Cincinnati. Both teams are having a great season and have the opportunity to play themselves into the Super Bowl. About nine minutes into the game Bills’ Safety Demar Hamlin made a tackle on Bengal receiver Tee Higgins. Higgins rammed into Hamlin’s chest and both players hit the ground. Hamlin stood up and took two steps before dropping to the field. The Bills’ train...

  • Eventual Fan

It has certainly been a tough year for sports, and by that I mean the many great figures that have passed away; many of these people were hall of fame athletes. I believe that baseball has taken the biggest hit. I was watching an ESPN interview and there were about nine deaths in the last 12 months, including Manager Tommy Lasorda. If you took all of these great ball players and put them on a roster, you would have a great team. The two latest deaths were former Dodger...

  • I heard that

Do you remember the time when going to a bowl game was what every school desired? With C-19 and everything that goes along with it, bowl games seemingly don’t mean that much this year. Maybe it was the delayed start of the season for several conferences. Maybe it was the cancellation of games after those delays. Maybe it was the fear of new outbreaks. Maybe it was the fact that some states or counties made it difficult to come home without first quarantining for two weeks. W...

  • Look on the bright side

I’m sure that as you look at the title to this particular column, you are probably thinking I need to be slapped. Fair enough. I guess it would be in all of our best interests to just be depressed and give up. It will never get better. But we all have to be smarter and tougher than that. There are enough ‘woe is me’ people that don’t appreciate a thing that they have, and the more they get the worse off they are. My parents got married five years into this nation’s depressio...

  • Greener pastures

Yes, even in a pandemic, the time of the season when football coaches are fired is upon us. You remember just three, four, five or six years ago when the athletic director walked into the press conference to announce the hiring of the next coach who will bring a new energy and sometimes dignity to the football program? At this point in time, the newly hired and very humble coach walks up to the podium telling the press corps about how he plans on recruiting and showcasing a...

  • What day is it?

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Aug 27, 2020

If you are anything like me, and for your sake I hope you are not, you are trying to remember what day of the week and month it is. We don’t need to be reminded that it is 2020. But this year has changed everyone. For instance; Monday had to be Memorial Day since the Indianapolis 500 was finally run on Sunday. I’m sure that you are groaning right now because you certainly don’t want to go back in time and relive the last three months. Well, you would if things were actually ba...

  • New baseball

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jul 30, 2020

When I was going to school a whole bunch of years ago there was a question that was sometimes asked concerning a popular subject. “What if they had a ______ and nobody came? Now the blank was always something extremely popular that everyone would want to see. Such as in 1964, what if the Beatles scheduled a concert in Spokane and nobody came? That would have been very hard to believe and was always met with a laugh or two. So what if the Major League baseball season started a...
