Ritzville citizens said their peace at a public hearing on Nov. 6 regarding the proposed ordinance that would ban cargo containers and pods in residential zoning districts. The public hearing took place at the beginning of the regularly scheduled city council meeting, with four different guests in attendance sharing their views on Ordinance 2116. Brandon Cline|Updated Jan 11, 2019

The 2018 Midterm Elections have come and gone, and Adams County residents will see a lot of the same political faces following this election. Federally, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D) was easily re-elected to her current position for a fourth six-year term, while Congressman Dan Newhouse (R) also breezed to re-election and will serve in the U.S. House of Representatives for another two years. But Newhouse will serve as a member of the minority party for the first time in Congress, as NBC News projects that the Democratic...

  • Danekas Bridge reopens after 28 days of repairs

    Brandon Cline|Updated Jan 11, 2019

The Danekas Bridge overpass on I-90 near the Tokio Weigh Station reopened on Oct. 29 after four weeks of repairs, a week ahead of schedule. The repairs were necessary after an oversized semi-truck transporting an excavator struck the bridge because it was too tall earlier this summer on July 10. The semi-truck was traveling under the bridge and eastbound on I-90 when it hit the bridge, damaging the entire eastbound span and forcing the Washington State Department of...

The Broncos asserted their dominance early in the game, leading 21-0 after the first quarter and 34-6 at halftime. The Broncos scored three more touchdowns in the second half to put the game completely out of reach for the Bulldogs, who play in the North Division of the Northeast 2B Conference. Quarterback Bryce Kelly got things started for LRS in his final game as a Bronco, finding his...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Nov 8, 2018

I’ll start with a good word for our regional Department of Transportation folks and the contractor who got the overpass at the Tokio interchange on Interstate 90 repaired and back open this week, ahead of schedule. The bridge that was damaged (in July, by an oversize load) takes Danekas Road over I-90 east of Ritzville. The timing was bad because the vehicles that were forced to take turns going across included trucks hauling commodities from our local farms. But on the bright side, once DOT closed the bridge completely on O...

  • Portland Shipyard Building is wave of the future

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Nov 8, 2018

When our military is viewed as an employer, it has the same problem as the private sector; attracting qualified people to fill jobs. In today’s vibrant economy, there is an abundance of “Help Wanted” signs. Even though our armed forces have stepped up their enlistment bonuses, they still fall short of their recruitment goals. There are just fewer qualified people in the employment pool to fill jobs which require higher educational standards, more skills, a willingness to work hard, and the dexterity to be part of a team....

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Nov 8, 2018

Last week, I met a couple angels in the Tri-Cities. No, really: I had the opportunity to sit down with James and Angie Sessions of Pasco. A few years ago, James and Angie were inspired to become foster parents after learning about the foster care system while at a local church’s camp for children in state custody. The Sessions fostered two separate sets of siblings who ended up being reunited with family members – an experience that came with the very real emotional toll that can come with providing a temporary home. Even kno...
