Two high school seniors have been selected to represent Washington wheat farmers and will serve as the Washington Wheat Ambassadors for the upcoming year. Lacey Miller of Ritzville and Evan Henning of Thornton were selected after an initial written application process that also included submitting a short introductory video. The Whitworth Pirates remained unbeaten and atop the Northwest Conference dropping the Pacific Boxers 37-19 at the Pine Bowl and EWU humbled the Idaho Vandals 38-14 during the Homecoming game in Cheney. Lind-Ritzville cross country runner Linnea Schafer has qualified for the State Cross Country Meet after advancing through the Regional Meet on Oct. 27 at the Harrington Golf Course. Schafer, a sophomore, finished with a time of 22:40 in the 5,000 meter race, good for 19th place overall out of the 70 runners who qualified for the meet. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos football team ended its regular season on Oct. 26 with a 35-13 loss on the road to the Asotin Panthers, but fans will still have one more opportunity to see this year’s team in action. Shipyard workers in Portland are building the first commercial-scale wave energy buoy which, if it works, could be part of a system providing electricity to communities along our nation’s coastline. Vigor’s shipyard has a $6.5 million contract to construct an 826-ton buoy which can generate 1.25 MW (megawatts) of electricity. Every calendar year, Social Security Administration (SSA) automatically calculates the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for beneficiaries based on the consumer-price index, which measures changes in the price level of a defined set of consumer goods and services purchased by households. The Lind-Ritzville Middle School had their first social activity of the year consisting of a lip sync battle and dance on Oct. 19. The football boys and the volleyball girls finished their season on Oct. 18. The ASB also ended their Chukar Cherry fundraiser sale on Oct. 19 to help pay for a new reader board. The Washington State Patrol’s new online tracking system for sexual assault kits has concluded its roll-out phase and is now fully implemented. The online system, modeled after a similar one in Canada, is developed by STACS DNA, Inc. Washtucna Heritage Museum’s third annual fundraiser was held on Oct. 19, which raised about $5,300 for the museum. A crowd of about 65 people attended the fundraiser, where they were treated to a Baked Potato Bar from Rollin’ Coal of Tucna. Thanks to a $10,000 donation from Avista Utilities and Strata Solar, Lind Middle School has purchased a new reader board to better connect and communicate with the community. The Adams County Historical Society (ACHS) has been awarded a $2,500 donation as a part of the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program. Donated by Albert Wollman, a farmer in Adams County, the ACHS will use the funds to purchase windows and doors to be installed in the Community Room of the ACHS Museum, which is located in Lind. “We are very thankful to Mr. Wollman for this grant,” said ACHS President Rudy Plager. “It will help us complete a phase in the museum.” A Hutteri... Ballots for the Nov. 6 general election were mailed out last week to voters in Washington state. Voters have until 8 p.m. on Nov. 6 to return their ballots at designated drop boxes located at: Ritzville City Hall, Adams County Public Services in Othello, Washtucna City Hall and Lind City Hall. The Lind Community Church is making final preparations for a Soup Supper and Auction. It will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 at their church in Lind. The theme will be a salute to Veterans. Serving time will be from 5-6:30 p.m. with the auction to immediately follow. Four soups will be featured along with salad, bread and pie.
