    Washington State Troopers working in the Yakima area are the first to switch over to a new digital radio system developed because of a change in rules by the Federal Communications Commission. Troopers all over the state will follow suit by the FCC’s deadline of Jan. 1. The rule change, intended to make more frequencies available for licensing, is essentially an unfunded federal mandate.     The Lind Town Council unanimously approved to award the bid for the Wastewater Treatment Plant to Kearsley Construction, Inc. during the regular meeting on Oct. 9. Kearsley Construction was the low bidder with a base bid of $2,553,567, an amount $217,000 over the engineers estimate provided by USKH, Inc. USKH civil engineer, Alan Gay P.E., spoke with the Lind Town Council during the meeting and advised them to move forward with awarding the bid.   • Mennonite Country Auction attracts crowd, big money

    The 35th annual Mennonite Country Auction and Relief Sale has been deemed a success, after raising an estimated $120,000 on Saturday, Oct. 6. Chairman of the auction, Howard Reimer, said that the live auction alone raised around $56,000. The amount places this year’s auction as the second highest amount ever raised during the 35-year history of the event.     Athletes, friends, family and fans were all sporting pink t-shirts Saturday when the LRS Lady Broncos hosted Odessa-Harrington for a volleyball match in Lind. The local team sold the shirts as part of volleyball’s “Dig for the Cure,” campaign. The effort is in support of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. John Flores began working part-time at the pharmacy last week and undergoing training to help relieve the amount of hours currently worked by Sam Duncan.     Irene Opal Selcho passed away peacefully at the age of 92, on Saturday, Oct. 6, due to kidney failure, she was surrounded by her family.
