  • Do you have an opinion?

    Dale Anderson|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Well it’s time once again for the NFL season and again there is a controversy with a few players still taking a knee when the National Anthem is being played and the American flag is on the field. The Dallas Cowboys owner basically told his players if you want to be a Cowboy you better stand for the anthem. Other teams are staying in the locker room until after the anthem is played just in case somebody decides to make a political statement. I believe that a few other teams ar...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Sep 13, 2018

While it’s still summer according to the calendar, the football schedule had the WSU Cougars playing their first home game of the season on Sept. 8; a sure sign that fall is not far off. Several weeks ago it looked like members of Cougar Nation who use State Route 26 would have to contend with a significant detour on their way to and from Pullman, while the highway bridge over the railroad tracks about 15 miles east of Othello undergoes major repairs. WSDOT says that project is now on hold until later in September, so h...

  • Action to improve student loan literacy

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Sep 13, 2018

As the nation’s students head back to classes after the summer break, choosing whether and where to attend college is a major focus for many high schoolers. In 2017, 44 million Americans had student loan debt, and with rising tuition costs, it is more important than ever to empower families with the facts so that financial literacy keeps them from pitfalls of a cycle of education-related debt. Knowing which questions to ask can be as important as finding the answers. Just ask any student or parent if they feel well e...

  • Lampson beating odds for family-owned businesses

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Sep 13, 2018

When one approaches the Tri-Cities, it is impossible to ignore Lampson International’s monstrous cranes in its Pasco assembly yard. Those gantries stand out like the Space Needle in Seattle and reach over 560 feet into the sky. Like the Space Needle, Lampson is built on a solid footing. Last month, Construction Review Online (CRO) ranked Lampson as the world’s third largest crane company. “Lampson International has been a world leader in the Heavy Lift and Transport industry for over 65 years. Initially started as a small dra...

  • City Responsibilities

Mayor Gary Cook, City of Ritzville|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Let’s go over it again. I have submitted several “City Hall’er” articles over the last couple of years asking city residents to be respectful of neighbors and keep their properties presentable. Out of town folks travel through Ritzville occasionally, looking to relocate a business or buy a home, with the same complaint: “I don’t want to buy next to a junky neighbor.” As a result the community misses economic and additional resident opportunities affecting employment, schools, businesses and other impacts. What should the ci...
