The Ritzville Journal office will be closed on Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. The Journal staff will return to the office at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The East Adams Library District (EALD) is hosting an exhibit featuring paintings by Lyn Hershey at the Ritzville Public Library. Hershey currently serves as a pastor at the Menno Mennonite Church. Hershey noted some of the paintings on display are a compilation of older and recent work. The Adams County Commissioners awarded the McManamon Bridge project bid to Halme Construction Inc., at the Aug. 27 meeting. Halme Construction Inc. came in as the low bidder at $1,742,171.02, which was $100,526.95 under the engineer’s estimate. In other business, the Commissioners approved project applications for the 2019-2021 Rural Arterial Program (RAP). The Ritzville School District moved one step closer to progressing on the Lind-Ritzville High School (LRHS) modernization project, after the Ritzville School Board of Directors unanimously awarded the construction contract to Walker Construction on Aug. 27. The base bid submitted by Walker Construction for the modernization project is $8,725,000. The Washington State Auditor’s Office completed an exit conference with Adams County regarding a financial statement and federal grant compliance audit for the 2017 fiscal year. The conference was held during the Aug. 27 Adams County Commissioners meeting. State Audit Lead Heather Peterson said the audit report will be published on the Auditors’ website in two weeks. One person was killed after a one-car rollover collision on U.S. Route 395, south of Ritzville city limits on Aug. 23. A Washington State Patrol report stated at approximately 2:45 a.m., Loren McGhan, 18, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Caviler northbound on US 395. The vehicle left the roadway to the left and veered back to the right where it rolled. McGhan was ejected from the vehicle. With only three commissioners present, but with a quorum, the Adams County Public Hospital District No. 2 Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the sale of East Adams Care Center and three parcels of property. The sale does not include the parcel with the maintenance shed, which East Adams Rural Healthcare will continue to utilize. During the Aug. 21 meeting, the Ritzville City Council approved an ordinance to modify the 2018 city budget. The ordinance amends the budget and the salary schedule to include wage increases for Ritzville Police Department records clerk Marsha Bradshaw, and part-time officer Jeff Lane. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos returned to the gridiron on Friday night to start preparing for the upcoming season. The Broncos hosted the annual Jamboree, with six area teams coming to Ritzville to participate in the preseason contest.
