    Katelin Davidson|Updated Aug 4, 2016

A confirmed discovery of genetically engineered (GE) wheat plants growing in a fallow field in Eastern Washington has led to a federal inspection. The discovery led to temporary deferment of wheat imports with overseas customers, but national and local agencies are working diligently to remedy the situation. In late June, a farmer located 22 wheat plants that proved to be resistant to herbicide glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup. The producer located the plants when they did not die after the application process. An...

  • It can make a grown man cry

    Dale Anderson|Updated Aug 4, 2016

It’s been over a week now when the inductions to baseball’s hall of fame were introduced. I’m not sure if it was planned that way but the highest and lowest drafted players were inducted. And guess what? I really liked both of these players. They were former Dodger and New York Met Mike Piazza and Seattle Mariner Ken Griffey, Jr. There really is some irony in choosing these two guys as Piazza was always a question mark as a major leaguer and Griffey had greatness writt...

Emma Aldrich, LRHS Student Correspondent|Updated Aug 4, 2016

In 1996, Dr. Richard Smalley of Rice University along with two of his colleagues were awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their contributions to the field of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is a branch of technology, often interdisciplinary, that involves measurements at 100 nanometers or less. One nanometer is equivalent to one billionth of a meter; in context, a molecule of water is less than one nanometer while the width of an average human hair is approximately 100,000 nanometers across. Of his discipline, Dr. Smalley...

  • Supporting our law enforcement officers

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Aug 4, 2016

Dallas. Baton Rouge. In those two cities, eight police officers lost their lives after being targeted and ambushed in two separate attacks. Our nation has been stunned as law enforcement has also been targeted in shootings in Philadelphia, in St. Joseph, Michigan, in Tennessee, in Missouri, and in Georgia. Two officers were shot in San Diego just last week. We honor those in blue who lost their lives or were wounded while serving their communities. Wearing the badge is a risk they take every day to keep our families and loved...

  • National Energy Policy must be broad, inclusive

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Aug 4, 2016

America must have a thoughtful and comprehensive national energy policy, which focuses on supplies that are environmentally friendly, abundant and affordable. Our strategy needs to include all energy sources. It must have balance and we need to have the patience, persistence and wisdom to implement it. It should encourage innovation. Energy is our nation’s lifeline. As our technology improves and our population grows, our dependence on electricity and transportation fuels increase. An “All-of-the-Above Energy Policy” would in...

  • Second Harvest no longer at Gritman Center

    Updated Aug 4, 2016

At the June meeting of H.E. Gritman Senior Center Board it was approved by majority a motion to opt out of the Second Harvest Food Program at this time. It is something that has been discussed numerous times and felt that this was the right time. Since word has gotten around it seems to have caused quite a fury. As a board member, I felt that maybe an explanation is in order. Please know that this was not an easy decision. I have always been in favor of helping the community. Yet, of late, as I see our elder workers becoming...

  • Safety in a small town

Mayor Gary Cook, City of Ritzville|Updated Aug 4, 2016

It seems like the norm these days when watching the news is that we find events are both shocking and disgusting. We keep asking ourselves “how did things get this way?” or “In my day these things never would have happened”. We might remind ourselves that this is a big reason we choose to live in a small town. You are right of course. Ritzville is a rare example of a small town with plentiful law enforcement and other services. We have City Police, County Sheriffs Department and Washington State Patrol all stationed here. A...
