  • It was, and will be, entertaining

    Dale Anderson|Updated Jul 26, 2018

I talked a little about the Major League All-Star game last week and the Mariners that were chosen to play in the game. The Mariners came very close to having back-to-back MVPs. If you remember last year’s game you would have remembered that Robinson Cano hit a late inning home run to lift the American League to another victory. This year the last man added to the team. Mariner shortstop Jean Segura hit a three run dinger to give the American League a three score lead late in... Full story

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Jul 26, 2018

The federal government plays an important role in Central Washington and across the West when it comes to a host of issues that impact rural communities. The federal government must manage vast tracks of federal lands including managing wild species, and preventing forest fires among other services. Residents of Central Washington expect the federal government to fulfill its responsibilities to the public and to respect local wishes, hearing us out about policies that affect our daily lives. Last week, I was pleased that the...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Jul 26, 2018

A year ago today the longest legislative session in state history finally ended. It was no fun being away from the farm during the run-up to harvest, but at least the heavy lifting we did in 2017 had much to do with the 2018 session ending on schedule. This year’s wheat harvests are already under way, with asparagus and cherry harvests winding down, and the talk I’m hearing so far is positive from the areas that usually come in earlier. By the time you read this my own harvest may be going, hopefully a safe and fire-free har...

  • Mining contaminated waters to increase copper supplies

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Jul 26, 2018

The massive Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana, is one of the world’s largest superfund sites and has been described as a giant sink filling with metal-laden, acidic water from over 10,000 miles of underground mine workings. It has been a ticking time bomb since 1982 when the mine owner turned off the pumps which kept the subsurface tunnels dry for miners. The pit has collected 50 billion gallons of toxic water. While the rising pit water is a looming environmental threat if it seeps into the area’s groundwater, it may be a new...

  • There is no place like home

    Updated Jul 26, 2018

My grandmother, Davida Hille, was one of my favorite people in the world. She passed away a few years ago. It has been very difficult for me. One thing that helps though is to see all of you. All of you remind me of her and the time I have spent in Washtucna. Although I haven’t known many of you since I was a child, it is nice to see and talk with you. It is so nice to see the friendly faces of the Gilchrests, the Meises, the Jessops, the Guskys, the Clinesmiths, the Hoffmans, all of my extended Hille family and many more. T...

  • Oklahoma

    Updated Jul 26, 2018

A live performance you don’t want to miss is at the high school auditorium in Davenport through Sunday’s matinee on July 29. Many of the actors are professionals with strong singing voices and lively dancing. I envy their auditorium with stadium seating, incredible acoustics and lighting. The band, the set, the costumes accompany the delightful shenanigans of the characters. Roger and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma is a great American musical and the Wheatland Theatre Co. in Davenport did a first rate job in its presentation. For t...
