    Bernadine (Doerschlag) Hegle passed away at the age of 95 on May 13 in Spokane. She was born May 11, 1917, to Louis and Gertrude Dahmen Keller in Sprague, Wash. She had an older brother: Joseph Claude Keller and a younger sister: Margaret Mary Keller Keehner. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Sprague and then attended Eastern Washington College.     Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum), a poisonous weed to people and animals, can currently be found growing throughout Washington State. Ingestion of a small amount of this noxious weed can be fatal. In 2010, Washington State had its first human fatality from poison hemlock since 1999.     The Ritzville FFA chapter traveled to the Washington State FFA Convention on May 10-12 to compete and receive multiple awards. The chapter took 34 members to Pullman for the conference on the Washington State University campus.     Once again, I would like to congratulate the Ritzville High School band on their performance at the Lilac Parade last Saturday night in Spokane. I am so proud to say I am a former Ritzville resident, and although I now live in Spokane, I enjoy seeing all the activities that the Ritzville students do, whether it be sports or being in the parade.     The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague tennis team had three athletes qualify for the state tournament and one athlete is eligible as an alternate. The group of four athletes travels to the 2B State Tennis Championships at the Yakima Tennis Club on May 25.     Justin Wargo is moving on to represent the LaCrosse-Washtucna Tigercat tennis team at the state finals this weekend at the Yakima Tennis Club.   • Assault reported in Washtucna School

    The Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of an assault that had occurred around May 7, at the Washtucna School. The complaint was filed on May 16 by a grandparent of the 14-year-old victim. The complainant advised police that the principal had sat on their grandson because he had disobeyed school rules.     The Ritzville High School Honor Society is hosting a community wide shred day on Saturday, June 2. The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon.
