  • Worst Seat In The House: I remember him...

    Dale Anderson, Sports Columnist|Updated May 16, 2019

Is it my imagination or have all of the really great Mariner highlights come to an end? The team that started out 13-2 with what seemed to be a 5 game lead over their AL West rivals are now mired in a major slump slotted in third place but by the time you read this the M’s could fall all the way to the bottom of the heap. I know we got excited when the Mariners were smashing home runs on a daily basis and manhandling opponents. But scouting reports can help teams adjust and t...

  • Golf team ends season at District Tournament

    Steve Salins, Reporter|Updated May 16, 2019

Two members of the Ritzville Golf Team rode with Coach Nick Weishaar to the Meadowood Golf Course near Liberty Lake last Monday, May 13, with hopes of keeping alive a tenuous opportunity to move on to the State Meet. They came close, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. The route to the State Golf Championship is slightly more complex than other sports, and a positive result this time was “not in the cards,” said Weishaar. “They gave up strokes when you can’t give up strokes.” Weishaar explained that this year, to qualify for...

With Memorial Day approaching, the American Legion Post 51 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 11446, would appreciate any help that is available for putting up the flags on the 24th of May at 5:30 in the evening. The take down of the flags will be the 27th of May at 5:30 in the evening. Help is also appreciated. I am sorry to report that there will be no memorial service this year due to lack of personnel. Age, health and other activities prevent this solemn occasion. Everybody have a great weekend and thanks for all of...

  • Letter to the Editor: Vacation Bible School returns next month

    Updated May 16, 2019

Dear Editor, As the school year nears an end, most of us think of summer. On June 17, Ritzville Community Vacation Bible School gears up. With an African Safari theme this year, we remember that When Life is Wild, God is Good. We will meet many wonderful wildlife characters and hear their adventures growing up. Lots of songs, food (insect snacks— not really but it looks like it), crafts, games and Bible stories of God’s love and care, even when life is not fair or scary. We would love to have you pre-register your child and y...

  • Column: Celebrating National Small Business Week

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated May 16, 2019

“Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy.” A lot of people don’t realize exactly how many small businesses are all around us. Whether it be a storefront on Main Street in downtown Ritzville, the local fruit stand off the highway in Selah, or an online boutique operating out of Winthrop, it is very likely that someone you know can call themselves a “small business owner.” Last year, I had the honor of meeting Mike Mauk, who owns Mauk Fishing Stuff. Mike has always loved fishing, but he was tired of his fishi...

  • Editorial: Celebrate Memorial Day by making a difference locally

    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated May 16, 2019

Memorial Day weekend is often a time for families to take a break from the monotony of everyday life, to pack into their cars, RVs and trailers for an extended weekend of camping, or maybe just staying at home for a weekend of relaxing and barbequing with friends and neighbors. According to a study from Wallethub, about 60% of Americans planned to barbecue over Memorial Day weekend in 2018, the second largest barbequing holiday behind only the Fourth of July (73%). Some 41.5 million Americans planned to travel over Memorial...

  • Legislative Commentary: May 16, 2019

State Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated May 16, 2019

Dear Friends, I’ll start by congratulating the thousands of WSU students who were awarded degrees this past Saturday, at the end of the 2019 spring semester. And by thanking the state Department of Transportation’s branches in Spokane and Wenatchee for putting several “variable message signs” here and there along US 195 and SR 26 with safety reminders for travelers heading west from Pullman. We want Cougar Nation to be safe! Speaking of travel, Governor Inslee must be taking a break from his job-hunting visits around the nat...

  • Capital budget includes funds to repair Washtucna Heritage Museum roof

    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated May 16, 2019

With other big-name projects in Adams County also receiving funding in the 2019-21 state capital budget, it might have been difficult to notice the $24,000 that had been set aside in the budget for the Washtucna Heritage Museum. But for the museum, the funds are crucial for helping to alleviate leaks in the building’s roof, which became noticeable earlier this year as snow began to melt. The $24,000 has been awarded to the museum as an emergency measure for the sole purpose of repairing the roof. According to Karin C...

The project, which spans from Jackson Street to Clark Street on First Avenue, has been a notable presence in the city limits for the past month or so. • City holds 'show cause' hearings in effort to impose nuisance ordinance

    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated May 16, 2019

Nine ‘show cause’ hearings were the stars of the Ritzville City Council meeting on May 7, as the City continues its crackdown on properties violating Ritzville’s nuisance ordinance. Collectively, the nine hearings took close to an hour to get through, as councilmembers voted to either: take no further action on a property; grant an extension to allow more time for the landowners to continue addressing the problems laid out by the City; or to adopt a resolution ordering the abatement of the nuisance on behalf of the City,...
