  • State Tournament

    Dale Anderson|Updated Mar 9, 2017

My first state tournament was a long time ago when I was in the second grade. I have been to at least one day of tournament games ever since, this one being the 58th in a row. I know there are some that have been to more but I’m a big fan. I had a brother who played at state and I played there in 1970. Ask anyone who has had the opportunity to play at the state tournament and they will tell you that was the best experience of their high school career. The memories will last a...

  • Former presidents are responsible for status of U.S

    Updated Mar 9, 2017

President Trump inherited a mess! The problems are not just from President Obama! The immigration problem started prior to World War II when people were needed to work in the fields as men and women were needed for the war effort. Our infrastructure goes back to Ike’s presidency as his program made it so nice to travel! Too many thought that program would last forever! Our military decimation goes back the Clinton Era, and the Bush-Obama war efforts used without adequate replacement. L.B.J was the first administration that e...

  • The new president’s priorities

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Mar 9, 2017

I had the privilege to attend as President Trump gave his first Joint Address to Congress. The message that America heard was one of optimism and reform. The President is getting straight to work with Congress on an agenda to restore limited government, boost the economy to create jobs in the private sector, and ensure that our homeland is secure. He spoke of “the renewal of the American spirit” and an “America is once again ready to lead.” The President was speaking to all Americans, but especially to those who have felt fo...

  • Lawmakers must consider costs of all taxes

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Mar 9, 2017

As lawmakers in Olympia inch toward adjournment, they must keep in mind the total added costs of new taxes on our state’s economy. It is not just about the taxes and fees they impose. They are working against an April 23 deadline to enact a two-year financial plan and find sufficient funding for it. Unlike Congress, states must balance their budgets. While the funding decisions are generally contentious, this year legislative tension is high because Gov. Jay Inslee (D) and lawmakers must find ways to pay for our K-12 p...

  • Finding coal and carrots

Mayor Gary Cook, City of Ritzville|Updated Mar 9, 2017

After 70 some days of snow covered ground it is inevitable the snow will melt and with that comes the horror of what’s been buried for the last few months. Chunks of coal and an occasional carrot or two are the only remains of your once proud snowman. Other items may also emerge such as those spare car keys, your wallet or that left handed work glove. This annual melt also reminds us that it’s time to clean our yards of debris that was there when it started snowing last fall. As you know, the city sends out cleanup let...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Mar 9, 2017

Last week was the busiest week of our session so far. We spent each day in the Senate chamber, with all 49 members present and voting on legislation that has come forward from the Senate policy and budget committees. While voting all day and into the evening allowed us to move many good policy changes over to the House of Representatives, it unfortunately left little time for visitors this week. I was unable to follow up with Latino Civic Alliance members Monday afternoon, after offering brief remarks in the Capitol Rotunda,...
