“This is a
great accomplishment for the district,” declared Nancy Miller on
Thursday, May 27, after hearing a report on the launch of the
swing bed program at East Adams Rural Hospital.
Miller is a
commissioner on the Adams County Public Hospital District No. 2
governing board. The commissioners received an update on the
swing bed program during the regular meeting on that Thursday
night.
Swing bed
services are a new offering at the hospital district. Swing beds
are for patients who no longer require acute care in a hospital,
but need “short-term skilled nursing care or rehabilitation
services,” according to a brochure prepared by the district.
“Our main focus is on rehabilitation therapies and continued
nursing and medical supervision to help the patient return to
their healthy state.”
The
commissioners have been eager for the new program to commence as
a new way to generate revenue for the district during a year
when the first five months of operations have been impacted by
the economic downturn.
Two
individuals took advantage of the district’s swing bed program
in May.
Staff
members reported during the meeting that they expect a third
patient in early June.
