December 17, 2009 Eva Rummer
Eva Rummer, age 92, was born in Tekoa on Oct. 3, 1917, and died peacefully at Hospice House in Spokane on Dec. 8, 2009. She was a graduate of Tekoa High School, where she played basketball. She met her husband of 68 years, Ray Rummer in Tekoa. They later moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where their daughter Patty was born. They moved to Spokane for a short while and then moved to Ritzville to work in the family clothing store, Rummer’s Style Center. Their son, Russ, was born in Ritzville. She was active in Lady Jaycees and the chamber of commerce, where she assisted for many years in building parade floats for Miss Ritzville Royalty. She spent countless hours in a Skywatch Tower at night as a Civil Defense volunteer during the early 1950s to identify suspicious aircraft. It is said she loved to play bridge and was with the same group for many years. It is also said she had a special gift of entertaining, cooking and baking for family and friends. She crocheted many afghans. She was a member of the Ritzville Women’s Golf Club. She and her husband moved to Spokane in 2004, living first at Clare House, then Harvard Park and recently Harbor Crest. She was diagnosed with lymphoma in September of 2009 and spent her final days at Hospice House. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, and grandson, David. She was the last survivor of 12 children born to John and Elisabeth Youngman. She is survived by her children, Patty Ellis Johnson and Russ (Gale) Rummer, all of Spokane; four grandchildren, Mike (Becky) Ellis of Port Orange, Fla.; Colleen (Michael) Edgerton of Wilmington, NC; Brian (Suzette) Ellis of Lind; and Tracy (Erik) Quissell of Boise, Idaho; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Spokane, PO Box 2215, Spokane, WA 99210. Services were held at the funeral home on Dec. 15, 2009, with family graveside services following. Danekas Funeral Home and Crematory-Ritzville was entrusted with arrangements. |
