October 9, 2008 Top barrel racers arrive for championships
The Washington Barrel Racing Association arrives in the city this weekend in a parade of horse trailers piloted by some of the state’s most talented cowgirls. Saturday and Sunday the WBRA will host its annual state championships at the Ritzville Rodeo grounds. The Washington Barrel Racing Association expects more than 150 competitors to converge on the city for a two-day session that will feature the best of the best during the championship finals on Saturday morning starting at 10 a.m. Karla Gust, the outgoing president of WBRA and the branch manager for U.S. Bank’s Ritzville facility, said the event will feature the top riders during the championships on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon the first official race of the 2009 season will begin at 1 p.m. A third race, also part of the 2009 schedule, will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Admission to all of the events is free to the public. On Saturday the championship race will feature the top 15 riders and horses in the open division. The top 10 in the 2,000 Novice, top 10 in 500 Novice, top five in the Youth division and top five in the Junior division will also compete. In the case of the 2,000 Novice event, competitors are eligible to compete in that division as long as the horse they use during the year has not won more than $2,000 prior to the start of the WBRA year. The same is true for the 500 Novice. In that case the horse and rider are eligible for the division as long as the horse has not won more than $500 prior to the start of the season. The Youth division is for riders between the ages of 13-18. The Junior division is for riders ages 12 and under. Coming into this weekend’s event, several barrel racers are in the running for top spots in their divisions. The following list maps out the standings in each division prior to Saturday’s championships.
